The Light is Changing.

Wow. It has been too long. I'm just realizing I'm not very good at this blogging thing. I want to be better, really, but I'm not.

I will try harder.

In the intervening months since I last posted a lot of LIFE has happened. You know, the kind outside of writing. It's been mostly wonderful and exhausting at the same time. I've also been doing some writing too, which always makes me feel good, even if the writing isn't.

School is back in. Mornings are misty with a tiny chill. Afternoons are warm and breezy. Crows caw. Grapes are pregnant. The house is silent. ALL the kids are gone. I miss the kids sometimes...and sometimes, I don't.

It is the same season here as the season in my book. This makes setting easier. All I have to do is look out my window and describe what I see.

The chickens are laying again and we got eight new chicks.

I got some lime green sandals in the mail.

We began planning our Halloween party last night.

Summer must be over.

Also, I've been doing this.
What have you been up to?

  1. Where ever you are, it sounds beautiful! I'm in Phoenix, Az and it's still very much summer here. Very much :) I miss my kids, too. More, I miss staying up late and sleeping in late. Keep writing - bad word are better than no words. And they're never as bad as you think :)

  2. Thank you Shiela! I also miss staying up late and sleeping in late. It's hard to be on a schedule.

I will keep writing words. Good or bad.

  3. Yay! An Emily post. I still want to figure out those origami stars. Wonderful to be writing in the same season as your book.

    1. I should do a star how-to post. I'm sure you all need more procrastination. And when you're trying to procrastinate, there's nothing like origami!

I've just been writing and looking for work.

    1. Martin,
We have an EPIC Halloween party. With all the trimmings, i.e. donuts on a string, bobbing for apples, costume contests, AND a pee-your-pants-scary spook alley. So, yeah, we have to start early.

Glad you're writing. Hope you find work.

  5. I want to go to your house right now. It sounds amazing! I've been deep in edits, doing a read through tonight and tomorrow and sending it back to my agent. Hopefully I'll be able to clean the house, read a book or two, and watch some BSG this weekend.

    1. What a coincidence, I want to go to YOUR house right now! Glad you're deep in edits. Must be wonderful to be deep in edits that a professional agent person has sent you! Wonderful and scary.

Hoping you get to see a bunch of BSG this weekend. Maybe you'll find out who the final cylon is!

  6. This makes me miss you, Emily! You know what I've been up to. Lots of life, too. But we need a life--a real life--if we want to be great writers, right? I'm trying to be grateful for the little moments of joy with my children or with writing, and I'm trying to relax and know somehow I'll find more time to write, and hopefully very soon. I'm glad you understand!

    1. I know. Real life can be a bitch, though. I think that's why we write, to escape real life sometimes. But, you're right, we can't write if we don't live, right?

Hang in there Katie. Someday we'll both find time to write.

  7. I agree summer flew by fast. It seemed like I wasn't looking and there it went. BUT before I know it, summer will be here again and it'll feel like it was just yesterday.

Getting good at blogging takes time and effort. It will come naturally. I'm still figuring out the nooks and crannies of blogging, too -- you know, knowing and understading how it works.

    Have a great weekend!

  8. Oh, Livia, I like that. Summer WILL be here again.

Thanks for the pep talk on blogging. Someday I'll get it right!

    Also, thanks for stopping by.

  9. A change of seasons always makes me slightly sad.
    This post however doesn’t.
Take all the time you need, because time is elusive, so when you catch it, you can better make it count ;-)

    1. Irene,
I know what you mean. The changing seasons are sad, but change can also be good! Hope all is well with you and your writing!

  10. Ok, Emily. I just caught up with this blog (why I didn't know about it until last week, I don't know - probably because I've been slightly absent from life in general). And I just got back from Kidlit Con in NYC yesterday - throughout the day I thought about you a lot. I'll just say I'm super excited for you.

    1. Oh Brooke, so happy to catch up with you again! Also, so happy you are a children's librarian and hopefully, someday you can push all our books onto unsuspecting teens!
